The Collection and the Exhibition Without Masks: Contemporary Afro-Cuban Art was curated by eminent Cuban art critic, curator and researcher in Afro-Cuban ritual arts, Orlando Hernández. It was the first exhibition of its kind and scope to be staged in Cuba.
A program of events related the exhibition took place during the opening week at which renowned academics in the fields of African and Afro-American art lectured and conversed on the topics and themes of the Exhibition.
Those participating included:
- Professor Robert Farris Thompson, Professor of History of Art at Yale University.
- Professor Charles Daniel Dawson, Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University.
- Professor Henry John Drewal, Department of Art History and Afro-American Studies at Winsconsin-Madison University.
- Professor Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz, Leverhulme Fellow in African Studies at Oxford University.
